EAST HARTFORD, CONN., (December 19, 2017) – United Steel, Inc., New England’s leading fabricator and erector of structural steel and miscellaneous metals, was recognized by four industry organizations for work on several award-winning projects. Engineering News Record, the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC MA), the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and NuCor Corp.’s NuHeights Design Award each honored projects that included intricate steel work by United Steel.
Engineering News Record honored United Steel for steel work on four projects: the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.; the Boston Public Library renovation; the new Worcester Regional Transit Authority Vehicle Maintenance, Operations and Storage Facility; and the restoration of the Old Chapel at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. ENR’s award honors projects that overcame challenges, contributed to the industry and community, and featured high-quality safety, construction and design elements.
Additionally, the AGC MA recognized United Steel with the Build New England Grand Honor award for its role in the new Sandy Hook Elementary School. This award honors the collaborative efforts that are required to successfully complete a project, illustrating exemplary industry practices used in construction today.
United Steel was recognized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission as part of the team that renovated the Old Chapel at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The $21 million project was one of 11 to receive a 2017 Historic Preservation Award from the commission.
The company also received a NuHeights Design Award from NuCor Corp. for outstanding steel joist and decking design work on the Worcester Regional Transit Authority Vehicle Maintenance project. Al Behr, president of NuCor’s Vulcraft/Verco Group, said United Steel and the other recipients exemplified “excellence in design and construction in building with steel.”
